Marriage as an uncertain Promise between One and Oneself (a Vow to Self-Loyalty)
Multidisciplinary project
May 2026
This multidisciplinary exploration includes a garment, a short film, multi-media collages and a photoshoot. This project aims to redefine marriage as a vow to self-loyalty rather than a commitment to another. By examining Jungian archetypes like the Anima and Animus alongside historical art, my work critiques societal pressures for companionship and advocates for internal completeness. This project emphasizes that self-sufficiency is a vital prerequisite for any external relationship, serving as a catalyst for personal empowerment and spiritual fulfillment.
Project Description
This project delves into the profound connection between an individual and themselves, emphasising the necessity of self-prioritisation before engaging with others. Finishing our own plate before indulging in another one. It challenges the conventional view of marriage as solely a devotion to another, advocating instead for the recognition of personal completeness through a suitable spiritual path. My research will explore human dualities, such as the Anima and Animus[1], principal actors of Jungian Psychology and question the societal need for companionship and how it is fed to us through art and litterature with exemples such as The Arnolfini Portrait[2]. I wish to spark a new conversation on the inherent union within us and show how self-sufficiency is necessary in order to not drown in someone else’s existance. Personal experiences have driven me to reevaluate relationships, it is a theme that permeates my reading, writing, and thoughts. I believe it is a universal truth that we are not eternally dependent on others, although this notion is often neglected. My project seeks to highlight the importance of self-awareness and empowerment in achieving fulfilment. Through visual depictions and subtle metaphors, I aim to redefine our understanding of relationships, countering media-influenced perceptions.
